Since there is a strong link between obesity and
Type 2 Diabetes, it is important to watch what you eat -- especially if you are overweight. However, healthy eating habits are important for everyone, even kids and teens who are not currently overweight.
What should I eat? The traditional Hmong diet consists primarily of white rice, pork, beef and other meats. Many kids and young adults do not eat a lot of vegetables, such as lettuce, broccoli, or peas, which need to be added to your diet in plentiful amounts.
It is best to avoid eating too much pork or red meat, since they contain more fat than skinless chicken or fish. Eat smaller portions of white rice, and try long grain or brown rice instead. If you are overweight, try to take smaller portions at meals.
